EPA: Pa. injection wells not causing problems so far

While there are issues of noise and ongoing truck traffic that are associated with injection wells used in the natural gas industry, they are still the preferred means for disposing of waste water from drilling operations in the Marcellus Shale, a Penn State educator said at a presentation in Towanda on Monday.

One of the main advantages of injection wells is that they avoid the necessity of trucking the large amount of waste water from drilling operations over long distances to the limited number of specialized plants in the region that can treat the water, he said. The long-distance trucking of the waste water can damage roads, he said.
